The US/Canada Water Trade Issue essays Canada is a country with vast spaces, forests, rich mineral deposits, and most importantly, an unlimited supply of water. In many places worldwide, water is a luxury, namely in the Southwest United States. Water plays an important role in both Canada and the US, as they share the status of top consumers of water in the world. Despite the fact that everyone needs water, a controversy has risen in Canada as the US is requesting the export of their bulk water systems to the arid regions of their country. With Canadas attempt to ban the massive exports to the US, as it may be the key to tomorrows economy. Many say that wars in the future will be fought in the future, and that water will be the oil of the 21st century. (Water) Also, Canadians have a growing concern of the fact that if bulk water sales start, they will be unstoppable, and possibly lead to a shortage of water in Canada. Furthermore, Canada is concerned with the unknown environmental consequences, which could come about in the removal of water from their sources. Not only will the removal of water cause possible damage, but the supplying of water to the US could cause them to abstain from putting their funds toward better conserving the arid regions. On the other hand, the US argues that many jobs could be created in the extraction of water from Canadas vast sources. They also argue that much of Canadas water supply is located in the northern areas, free of any human activity. Also, with the import of water from Canada, the US southwest arid areas may decrease the threat of global warmings effects. From the perspective of the US, the importing of Canadas water would have various benefits to the arid regions. If Canada were to export their water to the US, there would be more environmental damage to the US as a whole, than to their arid regions.
